Production I.G. and Adult Swim revealed new details and a trailer for their revival of the cult classic anime FLCL at Anime Expo 2017.

FLCL will get two new six episode-long seasons. Both are planned for 2018. The second season, referred to as FLCL 2, will star a young girl named Hidomi, whose life is turned upside down upon the arrival of a new substitute teacher who looks suspiciously like Haruko Haruhara. Alongside Hidomi is her classmate, Ide, who slightly resembles Naoto. There wasn't any story details for FLCL 3 other than it will be an entirely different story.

The Pillows, who did the original miniseries's soundtrack, will return to compose the show's OST with all new material. You can listen to one of their new songs in the trailer below.

The original series was directed and animated by the beloved Studio Gainax. Following Evangelion, Gainax began developing new animation tools and techniques for planned future anime series. However, their preceding series Evangelion depressed the hell out of everybody, including the directors themselves. They decided to come up with FLCL both as a playground for fresh faced directors to try out these new tools and techniques, as well as a response to EVA: make a fun, lighthearted series to cheer everybody up.

The second season of FLCL will follow tradition, bringing on board new and young talent, acting once again as an animator's training project. Each episode will have its own director who are relatively new to the industry, with a chief director supervising all episodes.
